Authoritative report: China's seven industries, including textile, will continue to maintain world-leading levels

5 March 2026

Currently, China's Manufacturing Power Development Index is in the same range as that of Germany and Japan, with all sub-indices experiencing positive growth, positioning China in the top tier of global manufacturing powers. Meanwhile, China's status as the world's largest manufacturing country continues to be consolidated. This is the conclusion drawn from the "2025 China Manufacturing Power Development Index Report" recently released by the Chinese Academy of Engineering.

China has successfully achieved the strategic goal of "taking the first step" towards building itself into a manufacturing powerhouse, becoming the fourth country to join the ranks of global manufacturing giants after the United States, Germany, and Japan.

The report summarizes three prominent highlights of China's manufacturing industry development in 2025: Firstly, innovation-driven development has become the primary driving force. For the first time, the increment of the sub-item value for innovation development ranked first among all sub-item increments in China's Manufacturing Powerhouse Development Index. This indicates that China's manufacturing industry, from high-end equipment manufacturing to emerging technology fields, and from basic research to application development, is continuously unleashing its innovative vitality and yielding a steady stream of innovative achievements.

Secondly, there has been a continuous improvement in quality and efficiency. The sub-indices for quality and efficiency have maintained the positive momentum from the previous year, with the overall growth ranking second among the nine countries. While pursuing scale expansion, China's manufacturing industry has placed greater emphasis on enhancing quality and efficiency. Many Chinese brands have made their mark in the international market, gaining recognition and trust from consumers.

Thirdly, the proportion of manufacturing exports in global exports has rebounded, and the decline in sub-item values for scale development in 2023 has been halted.

The report states that the next decade is a crucial period for China's "second step" in building itself into a manufacturing powerhouse. It emphasizes the need to regard the development of the manufacturing industry as a long-term strategy, firmly establish the important position of the real economy in the national economy, maintain a reasonable proportion of the manufacturing industry, promote the quality improvement, efficiency enhancement, transformation, and upgrading of the manufacturing industry, adhere to innovation as the fundamental driving force, highlight the important strategic position of industrial strengthening, accelerate the empowerment of new industrialization by artificial intelligence, build a green energy system and a green manufacturing system, and achieve the goal of basically realizing new industrialization by 2035, thereby placing China among the forefront of the world's manufacturing powers.

The "Green Paper on Technological Innovation in Key Areas of China's Manufacturing Industry - Technology Roadmap (2025)", released concurrently, predicts the progress of world-leading levels in multiple key industries: It is expected that by 2030, seven industries, namely information and communication equipment, advanced rail transit equipment, ship and marine engineering equipment, power equipment, new energy and intelligent connected vehicles, textiles, and household appliances, will continue to maintain world-leading levels and make breakthroughs in original innovation.

By 2035, it is expected that six industries, namely new display devices, robots, energy storage equipment, construction machinery, agricultural equipment, and building materials, will be among the world's leading ones; while industries such as aerospace equipment, industrial machine tools, integrated circuits, aircraft, new materials, biomedicine, high-performance medical devices, and food will collectively rank among the world's advanced ones.

It is reported that the "Manufacturing Power Development Index" is jointly developed by the Strategic Advisory Center of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, China Academy of Machinery Science & Technology Group Co., Ltd., and the National Industrial Information Security Development Research Center. It has been continuously released since 2015 and has garnered significant social attention, becoming an authoritative index for objectively evaluating the overall level of China's manufacturing industry.
